Orlando Pirates have progressed through to the semi-finals of the MTN8 Cup after defeating SuperSport United 3-1 in a match played at the Orlando Stadium.
The new season of the Premier Soccer League kicked off with the Wafa Wafa tournament, with this first match of the 2024/25 PSL season seeing a packed Orlando Stadium.
Pirates, who are hoping to defend the MTN8 trophy, put three goals past SuperSport United’s goalie, with the first goal coming through from Olisa Ndah in the 44th minute.
Matsatsantsa’s new signing, Vincent Pule, made his debut for his new side, netting an equaliser against his former side a few minutes in the second stanza of the match.
The match ended on a 1-1 stalemate, which saw referee Abongile Tom call for extra time.
It was the Buccaneers once again who found the back of the net first via Monnapule Saleng in the 92nd minute. Evidence Makgopa sealed it off for the Buccaneers with the third goal, ending United’s dream to play for the R10 million-rand cash prize.
The MTN8 action continues on Sunday when Stellenbosch FC hosts TS Galaxy at the Danie Craven Stadium in Cape Town, kick-off is at 3pm.
Next weekend sees Cape Town City travel to Polokwane’s Peter Mokaba Stadium to face off against Sekhukhune United on Saturday, while Mamelodi Sundowns will on Sunday host Polokwane City at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria.
Kick-off for these two fixtures is 3pm.
