The football fraternity is mourning the death of their own, this follows the news of the passing of George Chigova.

The sadness passing of former SuperSport United and Polokwane City  player, George Chigova was announced on Thursday, sending shockwaves throughout the football circles.

The news was confirmed by United, where Chigowa had two stints in his playing career, having joined them in 2014 from Dynamos in Zimbabwe. He rejoined SuperSport in 2020 after having played for Polokwane City from 2015. While he just started seven games for the club, he formed a great backup and training partner for the likes of Ronwen Williams, Ricardo Goss and Boalefa Pule. He also represented his country, Zimbabwe, making 32 appearances.

In a statement released by the club, he Chigowa was described as a “great club man, a gentle giant loved by current and former players and everyone at the club. Even though his official time with SuperSport United ended in June 2023, he was a regular visitor to the training ground and stadium to support the team.”

The club conveyed its deepest condolences to his family and friends both in South Africa and in Zimbabawe during this difficult and very sad time.

Meanwhile, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) also added their voice in sending out condolences for Chigowa’s family.

A short statrement released by the PSL read, ” The Premier Soccer League (PSL) is shocked and saddened by the untimely passing of former SuperSport United Football Club and Polokwane City Football Club goalkeeper, George Chigova. The League sends heartfelt condolences to the Chigova family, his former colleagues, and the football community at large.”

A moment of silence will be observed in his honour ahead of this weekend’s DStv Diski Challenge fixtures.
