The Minister of Sports, Arts & Culture, Minister Nathi Mthethwa has announced that national women’s football team, Banyana Banyana, would now be paid equally to their male counterparts, Bafana Bafana. Minister Mthethwa announced this on Tuesday morning during “welcome home ceremony” held for them at the OR Tambo International Airport.

The celebrations and the huge financial gesture from the Minister comes after they won the WAFCON 2022, beating Morocco in a final staged in Morocco on Sunday. Hundreds of happy football loving fans and cheerful South Africans flooded OR Tambo to welcome Africa Champions.

“In this country it is going to be a law that Bafana Bafana and Banyana Banyana will be paid equally because we are going to make that work as the government. It’s not only Banyana Banyana that we are supporting but all the women football teams in this country. We have said to SAFA that when we give them the money they should put women aside for women and it’s not only to Banyana Banyana but to others sports as well like cricket and rugby.

“We have been doing that and we will continue to do they. We are just informing those who don’t know. We are not not coming out. We are claiming this victory because we have worked for it as the government, ” Mthethwa concluded.
