SuperSport United FC have confirmed that the club and Head Coach Gavin Hunt have reached a mutual agreement to part ways. News on Hunts departure broke on Thursday afternoon, however no official word was released by the club, until they released a statement on Friday morning, stating that Hunt leaves the club with immediate effect.
The club has announced that Andre Arendse will serve as an interim Head Coach with Goalkeeper Coach Grant Johnson as his assistant.
This was Hunt’s second stint for Matsatsantsa, which lasted two and a half seasons, with the team finishing 3rd in the 2022/23 season and 7th in the 2023/24 season in the league competition.
The 60-year-old Hunt suffered a series of losses, which see Matsatsantsa languish on the 15th spot in the Betway Premiership League Log after 21 games. United has collected only 21 points.
Hunt was recently celebrated after he achieved a special milestone in February this year, having reached 1000 PSL Games as Head Coach, which is a first in South African football and is unlikely to be easily surpassed.
In the statement, United’s board and management of the Club expressed their appreciation to Hunt for the work he had done as Head Coach over many years.
“We remain convinced that Gavin still has much to contribute to South African and African football given his extensive knowledge and experience and will always remain grateful for the impact he has had on the club and South African football,” said the statement.
Meanwhile, United will be looking at collecting maximum points when they face off against the equally struggling side in Cape Town City FC on Sunday, the 30th of March at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
Cape Town City also parted ways with Muhsin Ertuğral last week, following his own poor results with the Citizens. Etrugral had joined the team in January to replace Eric Tinkler who was sacked while City were in 12th place. City is currently in 13th position in the league.
Kick-off is at 17:45pm.
