Following Tuesday’s widespread speculation on the future of now former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rhulani Mokwena, the club has confirmed that the 37-year-old mentor is indeed leaving the club.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the club said, “Mamelodi Sundowns and Rhulani Mokwena amicably concluded an agreement bringing to an end Rhulani Mokwena’s employment as Head Coach.”
According to various news reports, Mokwena reportedly had a fall out with one of the seniors in the management of the club, due to his inability to sign and release players.

In the statement, the club said Mokwena’s departure was a board decision and not that of an individual.
“The decision of Mamelodi Sundowns was taken by the Board taking into account the objectives and expectations of the Club and was not influenced or based on the recommendation of any individual associated with the Club,” said the statement.
“Sundowns wishes to express its gratitude to Rhulani Mokwena for his contribution to the successes and achievements of the Club during his tenure as Head Coach. Rhulani Mokwena will forever be part of the Mamelodi Sundowns Family and the club wishes him all of the very best with his future endeavours,” added the statement.
Meanwhile, coach Manqoba Mngqithi who was Mokwena’s second in command, together with the technical team, are set to continue to lead and take control of the training and preparation of the players for the upcoming season.
