While the hosts will be fighting to secure a spot in the top eight of the DSTV Premiership League Log of the current season that is ending soon, the visiting team could potentially be confirmed the league champions.
The stage has indeed been set for the clash between Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns, the duo will sweat it out on Thursday evening at the FNB Stadium to honour one of their few remaining matches of the 2023/24 season.
Chiefs, who recorded their first win for this year against another Tshwane outfit in SuperSport United over the weekend, will be looking at collecting maximum points from Sundowns, wo are yet to record a loss in their 23 matches played so far.
Sundowns are also from a 3-0 victory in their last DSTV Premiership clash against TS Galaxy on Monday night at Loftus Versfeld. Before this match, ‘Downs were dealt a blow by Tunisia side, ES Tunis, who secured a 1-0 victory (2-0 on aggregate) in the second leg of the semifinals on Friday evening at a full house Loftus, denying them continental glory.
This is the two teams’ third encounter this season, having met earlier in the season for the league and the MTN8, Sundowns won both matches.
Chiefs, who are currently in position 8 in the log standings will be wanting to move upwards to cement their spot, they have collected a total of 33 points from 25 matches played so far, while Sundowns could be crowned league champs if second placed Stellenbosch FC beat Golden Arrows on Wednesday in a match to be played at the Danie Craven Stadium in the Western Cape, otherwise they will have to beat Chiefs for them to be crowned champions before all the 16 PSL teams honour all their remaining fixtures.
