South African National Women’s football side, Banyana Banyana, were left heartbroken as they lost their very first match in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Wellington. Banyana are in Group G, alongside Italy and Argentina.
Banyana, who had got the back of the net first on the 48th minute, conceded a 90th-minute goal which led to their loss against Sweden, the 3rd ranked women’s team in the world.

Coach Desiree Ellis’ girls found the back of the net through a goal from Hilda Magaia, but Sweden’s Fridolina Rolfo equalised in the 65th minute, while it took Sweden until the dying mutes of the match to break the stalemate through a goal from Amanda Ilestedt.

While Sweden had been favourites to win this match, Banyana held their ground until they are dying minutes of the match, they are now await their upcoming fixtures against Argentina on Friday the 28th and Italy on Wednesday the 2nd of August 2023.
