Orlando Pirates were crowned 2023 Nedbank Cup champions, following their dramatic 2-1 win over Sekhukhune United at a packed Loftus Versfeld stadium on Saturday night. This is the Buccanners second and successful final of the season, clinching the MTN8 at the start of the 2022/2023 season.
The game commenced at a rapid pace, with both teams showcasing their attacking impetus. While Orlando Pirates applied pressure with early possession of the ball, Sekhukhune looked to exploit the Buccaneers in transition moments. This is coach Jose Riveiro’s maiden season at helm, and has delivered two trophies, and a second spot finish in the DSTV Premiership League Log, qualifying them for the CAF Champions League.
Sekhukhune will however get their chance to taste inter-continental football when they participate in the CAF Confederations Cup.
Goals of the evening came from Sibusiso Vilakazi for Sekhukhune, Tapelo Xoki converted a penalty a few minutes before half time, with Terrence Dzvukamanja winning it for Bucs in the dying minutes of the extra time.
