Kaizer Chiefs have pulled a double DSTV Premiership League Win this season after securing three points in the second instalment of the popular Soweto Derby. Chiefs hosted Pirates at the FNB Stadium on Saturday, and while the derby has always confirmed maximum fan attendance, Saturday saw a “not so packed Calabash”.
Amakhosi, who have been having a rough patch in recent matches, were the underdogs going into this match, with head coach, Arthur Zwane under pressure to bring good results to save his job. Their loss last Sunday to Golden Arrows at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, saw Zwane being shielded from a group of angry supporters by the police after the match as they called for his sacking.
Pirates, who were down to 10 men after captain Innocent Maela was sent off for a tackle on Christian Saile, saw one of their own score an own goal in the 89th-minute, securing Amakhosi a win a few minutes later.
Olisa Ndah’s own goal came about when he nodded in Edmilson Dove’s long ball.
Pirates had to go into the match without the leadership of their head coach, Jose Riveiro, who was serving his recent suspension. Riveiro was subjected to the stands while his assistants took charge.
The two clubs are currently at 31 points and two positions apart on the DSTV Premiership League Log. Pirates are coming up against another Soweto club in Swallows FC, on Friday at the Dobsonville Stadium. Kick off is at 19:30pm.
