Mamelodi Sundowns have won almost every trophy and cup competition that the Premier Soccer League (PSL) has to offer and even went beyond the borders and won the CAF Championship but one cup they haven’t won is the Carling Black Label Cup, and this might just be corrected as soon as November.

The 2022 Carling Black Label Cup was launched at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday and unlike the past instalments where just Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs participated, all the 16 DSTV Premiership teams have the chance of participating. Supporters will have to vote for their team to have a chance of being one of the four teams which will participate in the one day tournament this year.

The tournament will be held on the 12th of November at the FNB Stadium, at the launch, the latest leader board was presented, showing Kaizer Chiefs leading the pack, Orlando Pirates in second, Mamelodi Sundowns on the third spot, while KwaZulu-Natal side AmaZulu on the fourth spot.

Speaking with excitement at the launch, former Sundowns midfielder Tiyani “Sugar” Mabunda said that as a team they would want to qualify for this one day tournament and win it as it’s the only trophy missing in their cabinet.
Mabunda, who is now an official at the club, said that he feels that Black Label has given all the team the chance to win this time around.

“At Sundowns we want to win every cup that we compete in. Yes we don’t have the Carling Black Label Cup in our cabinet because we didn’t participate in it in the past, but now that we have the chance to play in this tournament we will be going for a win. All we want now is for our supporters to vote so that we are one of the four teams on the day,” he said.

Mabunda added, It doesn’t really matter what position we finish on in the voting as long as we are in the top four then we are good to go. The most important thing is to qualify then take it from there. But the end result we want to go out there and play to win the only trophy that is missing in our trophy cabinet.”
