The President of the South African Football Association, SAFA, Danny Jordaan has said that the project to win the Women African Cup of Nations, WAFCON, started as early 2013 when SAFA decided to remove men from all the Women Football teams and appointed female coaches.

Jordan said they decided to bring in one of the top three coaches in the World Vera Pauw, a Dutch football coach and former player, to mentor Desiree Ellis.

He was speaking on Tuesday at the homecoming ceremony held for Banyana Banyana following their crowning as the WAFCON champions. Hundreds of South Africans converged at the OR Tambo International Airport to welcome Africa’s champions.

“After 2016 Rio Olympics we asked Vera if Desiree was ready to take over Banyana Banyana and she said Desiree was more than ready to take over Banyana Banyana, and when we appointed Desiree we told her that we believe in her and today here we are celebrating with her today after winning the WAFCON, ” Jordaan said.
